Renting a Boat Without a Licence on Lefkada: What the One Booked Option Gives You
Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read
Our GetYourGuide listings for Lefkada contain one boat rental without a licence, and its page is less clear than its title. The Ionian Sea boat rental without a licence costs from €210 for the whole boat, takes up to seven people for eight hours, starts at the port of Nikiana and has 4.5 stars from 11 reviews. That is a small base of opinions, so treat the rating as a first impression.
| Option | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Ionian Sea boat rental without a licence | from €210 per boat | 5 m boat, 40 hp engine plus a 4 hp backup, up to 7 people, 8 hours |
| Island-hopping boat cruise with lunch and drinks | from €68 per person | 7 hours, Meganisi, swim stops, lunch and drinks |
| Private sailboat rental with skipper | from €130 | a skipper steers; 5.0 stars, but only 2 reviews |
What the licence rule actually says
Rental companies in Greece commonly quote the same rule: an adult of 18 or over with a valid ID may drive a motorboat with an engine of up to 30 hp without a skipper licence. A boat-hire company based in Nydri, Ionion Marine, states it in its own FAQ. Neither source is the law itself, so read it as the trade’s working rule rather than a legal text.
This is where the booked boat becomes a question mark. Its engine is 40 hp, above that 30 hp figure. The page also lists a skipper under what is included, and in the same breath says that no skipper licence is required. It does not explain who steers. Before you pay, ask the operator in writing who drives, whether you are allowed to, and what the rental agreement says. If a crew member is on board, this is closer to a private boat trip than to a rental, and that is fine, but it changes who decides where you go.
The day, as the page describes it
The boat leaves from Nikiana, on the north-east coast. The listed route runs along the coast of Lefkada to swim stops, then to Vathy, the harbour village of Meganisi, with Skorpios as a photo stop. Several stops are marked optional, and the page says itineraries may change.
The description also mentions Porto Katsiki and Egremni. Both lie on the island’s exposed west and south-west coast, and nothing in the listed route goes there. The local operator mentioned above keeps its own boats within the waters of Skorpios, Sparti and Meganisi, and says the west-side beaches are off limits because of wind and waves. Plan for the east coast and the islands, not for the famous beaches. For those, see Porto Katsiki and Egremni: by boat or by car?.
Money, fuel and what is on board
Fuel is not included. The page says you pay the exact amount used at the end of the trip, and the tanks hold 55 litres plus 10. Ionion Marine charges €1.80 per litre on its boats; use that as a rough guide, not as the price of this one. The boat carries a cooler with ice and water. Bring sunglasses, a hat, swimwear, a towel and sunscreen, as the page lists.
At the full seven people, the €210 comes to €30 each before fuel. With two it is €105 each, which buys a lot of cruise: the €68 island-hopping cruise includes lunch and drinks and nobody has to steer. The boat only makes sense when you are a group, you want your own pace, or you want to swim where the big boats do not anchor.
Who should not book it
The page says the activity is not suitable for non-swimmers or for people prone to seasickness. A small boat moves more than a cruise boat, and wind can make the sea choppy. The Nydri operator discourages going out in rain or extreme wind, so check how the operator handles bad weather. The booking offers free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund. If the forecast looks rough, that is the moment to look at your options.
If the group wants a guide, snorkelling and a hot lunch, a cruise suits better. Our guide to Skorpios and Madouri: kayak or boat compares the two, and island cruises from Nydri lists the cruises.
Our recommendation
Book the rental only if you are a group of four or more who want a private day around Meganisi and Skorpios, and you have the operator’s answer on who drives and what the weather terms are. For couples and families who just want the water, the island-hopping cruise costs €68 per person and brings lunch, which works out cheaper than the boat for any group under four.
